1. What got you into the music business?
My granddad was a bluegrass musician in East Tennessee, so I grew up around music and knew I wanted to pursue music as a career as a songwriter and artist. I found out about the music business program at Belmont and moved to Nashville after graduating high school to chase the music dream.
2. What’s your favorite part about working in music?
You never stop learning. Whether it’s about the business or it’s creativity, you are constantly learning more. There’s so much to discover with music, and it can be so therapeutic.
3. Who are your favorite bands and influences?
My influences have always been artists such as The Chicks, Jewel, Johnny Cash, Alanis Morissette, and songwriter Brandy Clark. I grew up on many genres, but my favorites have always been country, pop, and rock ‘n roll.
4. If you could meet any musician or songwriter, who would it be and why?
Definitely Brandy Clark. I love the way she utilizes storytelling in her songwriting. Her approach is so captivating and she always puts you right in her stories with her use of imagery. I would love to learn from her.
5. How has this past year changed the way you approach music?
It made me realize I can be more creative about how I put music out into the world and make money from it. Instead of playing live shows, I utilized my producer skills to start creating tracks and songs for other people. I was able to reach out to a wider audience through live streaming. I also took the time to practice mindfulness and restfulness and wrote many songs on my own to practice my craft. There are so many different areas in music we can focus more on when some aspects of it are not feasible.
